How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + rate / 100). For a net price of 100 and a 20% tax: 100 × 1.20 = 120. The tax portion is 20.

How do I remove tax from a price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + rate / 100). For a gross price of 120 and a 20% rate: 120 / 1.20 = 100 net, with 20 tax. This is the reverse of adding tax.

What is the difference between sales tax, VAT and GST?

All are consumption taxes on goods and services. Sales tax is added at the point of sale (common in the US). VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain (common in the EU and UK). GST is similar to VAT and used in Australia, Canada, India, and others.

Is tax added before or after a discount?

In most countries, tax is applied after any discount, on the final net amount. You pay tax only on what you actually pay, not the pre-discount price.

Why is the tax amount different when I remove tax versus add it?

Because the base amount is different. Adding 20% to 100 gives 120 (tax = 20). Removing 20% from 120 gives 100 (tax = 20). But if you incorrectly apply 20% of 120, you get 24 — that is not how VAT extraction works. Always divide by (1 + rate/100).
